Schedule Performance Index (SPI) per Project

Schedule Performance Index (SPI) per Project is a project management key performance indicator that answers the question "Is your project behind or ahead of the schedule until now in terms of time?" It shows how effectively the time is used to complete a project by comparing what has been performed up to a certain date with what should have been completed up to a certain date. Schedule Performance Index (SPI) is a project efficiency rating that shows how much work has been actually done for every 1 scheduled hour of work.

Schedule Performance Index (SPI) can be calculated by the formula:

Schedule Performance Index (SPI) = Budgeted Cost of Work Performed (BCWP) / Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled (BCWS)

    This equation is equal to:

Schedule Performance Index (SPI) = Earned Value (EV) / Planned Value (PV)

If the value of this KPI is less than 1 the project is behind schedule in terms of time.

If the value of this KPI is greater than 1, the project is ahead of the schedule in terms of time.

If SPI is equal to 0, the project sticks to the schedule just as it was planned in terms of time.

For example, if BCWP of the project is $9 000 USD at certain date and BCWS is $15 000 USD at the same date, SPI of the project is 0.60. It means that for every 1 planned hour of work, only 0.67 hours have been completed comparing with the schedule.

While Cost Performance Index (CPI) shows how efficient your project is going in terms of budget, Schedule Performance Index (SPI) shows how efficient your project is in terms of time. Both KPIs help you compare the progress of projects with different scope.

To calculate Schedule Performance Index (SPI) per Project please follow the steps below:

  • Add the custom field "BCWP" with code "cf_bswp"
  • Add the custom field "BCWS" (Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled) with code "cf_bcws"
  • Add the custom field "SPI" with the formula:
  • $cf_bcwp / $cf_bcws

  • On Task Tree select the task group for which you need to display Schedule Performance Index (SPI) per Project  and select "Custom fields options"
  • Set the following custom fields settings for the custom fields: "BCWP", "BCWS" and "SPI"
    • In "Settings for" select "This task group"
    • select "Enable"
    • select "Calculated by custom field formula (for task group)"
  • Schedule Performance Index (SPI) per Project on Task Tree
